SUMMER MASTERCLASS:

Its been a few years since my last week long summer class and I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be teaching in Seattle at the Cornish Institute from July 12 - 17, 2010.   Paul Taub, Cornish's flute professor and a noted contemporary music interpreter and versatile improviser, will be second course instructor.

Most masterclasses on new music focus on technique and interpretation of fully composed works.  We will go further into technique than any other class, I promise!   And we'll delve deeply into repertoire from Varèse to the present.   The signal difference is that we will also explore our own creativity.   Whether you're an experienced composer-performer or you've never improvised a note in your life -- but want to! -- this is the class you've been waiting for.  We will put it all together.  Please don't feel you need to know it all before coming -- a desire to learn and a spirit of adventure is the preparation you'll need.

This six-day workshop designed for intermediate and advanced-level high school, college, young adult and young at heart flutists (of any age) offers aspiring flutists an opportunity to work with and learn from Robert Dick, one of the most influential flutists in the world today, and the flutist who more than any other has reshaped the present and future of the flute. I will be joining Robert as a second course instructor.

A daily masterclass each morning will be followed by afternoon coached ensembles ranging from duets to compositions for the entire class to an improvising ensemble. We will cover a wide variety of repertoire, but the emphasis will be on the music of Robert Dick and the major and emerging composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. We will explore techniques such as multiphonics, throat tuning, and circular breathing. Improvisers are welcome! The week culminates in a Saturday evening concert for friends and family featuring all of the workshop participants.  The class is designed for flutists who wish to explore new repertoire and techniques in an environment that encourages spirited creativity. Students with a solid foundation on their instruments who are interested in exploring the sounds of today are encouraged to apply.

Audition Requirements

Please submit a 7 to 10-minute CD or DVD that includes examples of two works of your choice. Accompaniment is not required. You may include a composition (or improvisation) of your own, or submit two pieces of any style.

The Priority Application deadline: April 15, 2010. Tuition for the class is $495.00.  Cornish residence halls will be available at a very good rate for out of town students.
